Playgrounds Need Creative and Unique Ideas

June 17, 2010

The great thing about playgrounds is that they are set up to succeed from the start. What child wouldn’t want to take a slide ride or shoot back and forth on a swing set? This may be why designing and building playgrounds is so fun, they are just so well received by the community and children they serve. However, it is also important that they continue to be unique and creative so that the individual needs of the community are met and so that a place has a distinctive site to call their own. Here at Miracle Playsystems we really try to take each project and mold our designs around exactly what the client wants. We come up with many project specific ideas so that each project is unique and creative.

So what kinds of ideas are unique and creative? Well, color schemes should be designed to fit in the sit essence of a place. Blues and greens should be played with to form nature scenes and reds and yellow should combine to form a truly unforgettable site. Structures should be built to serve multiple purposes. For instance shade structures can be designed into a pirate ship theme to form the sails of the site. Actions such as this keep playgrounds interesting and functional as well. Of course you want to be as unique as possible, but the challenge is getting there.

To be truly unique you can’t just try to be unique. You have to fit the exact specifications of your project and the uniqueness with develop itself. Each client’s needs will be different on some level so by tailoring each design to those needs your design will be rather creative and individual, plus functional and appealing. Playgrounds need creative and unique ideas to stay interesting, but also so they fit the needs of a community, client, and area. And you know a playground is going to be fun!

Fantastic Playground Curves Mean Elegance in Fun

June 10, 2010

Streamlined designs put on a show for the eye. Twisting turns and swooping lines can take a bland structure and make it extremely eye catching. With playgrounds, fantastic curves make for elegance in terms of aesthetics, but also promote fun, flow, and even safety. Playgrounds should help beautify a place such as a park, church, school, or community event center. When the right amount of curvy movement comes together with functionality and durability, a great thing happens, a playground is created that will improve the space its in while looking good.

In terms of flow, curves make for an aesthetic design most of the time. They dip down in smooth fashion and shoot upwards with grace. Rounded edges give off the feeling of endless lines… a feeling that will put visitors at ease. Speaking of rounded edges, these are also much more safe than sharp, 90 degree angles that point out in hazardous fashion. Rounded corners are also easier to move around and improve lines of sight. Meaning, children will run into each other less often because they will have more time to dodge each other.

Bottom line: curves look good and serve a very functional purpose. They add to the fun of a playground by making it easier to navigate around. Curves decrease the chance of injuries and improve the chance of walking away from a day of play without the bumps, bruises, and scrapes that can be associated with a full force day of playground fun. Designers, keep these functional curves in mind more often when designing a playground… and if you do it already, without even thinking, its probably because they look so good.

Design Secrets for Playground Success

June 7, 2010

Many design factors contribute to a successful playground project. When designing a playground, it is important to work through form, functionality, and cost often in order to keep with a client’s guidelines for the project from beginning to end. There are a few, simple design secrets that can really improve your project during the planning stages so that when it comes time to present your project to a client you know you will not have overlooked a few great details. These design secrets are basic, but many people won’t think about them until its too late… or too far into the game plan for changes to be possible… or too bad because the client went another direction.

The first design secret for playgrounds is to keep water in mind the entire time. For example, how much rain does the site get each year? A factor like this can help you decide on surfacing options, run-off support, and even which features are acceptable. If it rains a lot, porous playground decks are a must and a ton of slides may not be a good idea. If the playground is at the base of a hill, it will most likely receive a lot of runoff so a bark chip surface might end up costing a client a lot of money year after year to replace. By simply keeping water in mind they entire design period, a designer can impress their client by offering very functional design aspects.

The second design secret for playground success is the implementation of both shade structures and weather shelters. For early spring park activities, having both ends of the spectrum covered will ensure that your park visitors can enjoy themselves thoroughly rain or shine. Most areas have on or the other but the few that have both have the advantage of catering to people through the all of the elements, which keeps the park or playground popular, and popular sites get noticed. Take the time and figure out how you will include both shade and shelter and your park will be noticed by both your client and your community.

Fun Water Playgrounds to Keep You Cool All Summer

June 3, 2010

A fun water spray park goes as far in the summer as a humungous water balloon fight or a day at the lake complete with paddle boats and all. These destination sites are pretty much amazing and all enjoy their attractive water jets and alluring fountains. So gather round frog and flower sprayers alike and cool of with all your friends and family at the local water spray park today. If designing a new water spray park for your community, you may want to keep a few things in mind…

First, its fine to build in open fields but just make sure to include a shade structure so that patrons of the park have a retreat from the hot sun. Also, it is a good idea to have paved path ways up to the edge of the spray park from the parking lot because when wet it is easy to get dirty on the way back to the car…a simple design aspect such as this is exactly what will keep communities using your park all summer long. In terms of size, make sure the park is appropriate for the size of the community. Make the park too small and it will be overcrowded on especially hot days. Of course make it too large and it’s a waste of materials, resources, and the short and long term funds of your client.

A final design aspect to remember when designing a water spray park is the incorporation of benches, water fountains, trash receptacles, and other things of this nature… basically, don’t forget the supporting cast of the spray park. Children are the main attendees of the park, but adults will be right there too most likely watching and they will need places to sit—preferably in the shade—and relax. They will also need to throw away trash and get the occasional drink of water for themselves as well as their kids. Design the best water spray park possible and keep in mind that it’s the little details that make a big difference.

Cutting Edge Playsites that Speak Aesthetics in Volumes

June 1, 2010

When designing a playground you want every feature to be a standout on its own, but also blend together. This is when play sites really speak volumes in terms of aesthetics. In the design stage, get in there and include tall structures and low lying ones too such as high slides and balance beams that have similar forms and colors so that they look like they belong together, even though they are incredibly different. When a designer can make polar opposites look like they belong in the same room together, he or she knows they have done a superior job.

Go a step further when putting a playground together and consider things like the flow of children and the position of exits and entrances. By doing this, a designer limits the fun deterring effects of congestion and also makes the site more safe and healthy. Entrances should no be directly in front of exits for instance. If they are, collisions are much more likely to occur. When a playground is set up correctly, children will move through it naturally and the site will look good at all times, whether that be when its alone on a rainy day or filled with children when the sun is bright and high in the sky.

Don’t forget to use juxtaposition with colors and forms too. This will inspire creativity and will not dull visitors. However, well put together themes are a great idea and will set up many play time games and adventures. When designing, it is important to have a reason behind everything that promotes function as well as aesthetics and wouldn’t you know it, when things are functioning well they usually look good. A nice playground is like a nice sports car…when every thing is running smooth, the good times are rolling and yep, it sure looks nice.

New Technology to Shake Up the Playground World!

May 4, 2010

New features in the play industry have been invented—actualizing ideas that are really extraordinary. These creations have taken traditional playground equipment to a level probably once thought impossible. For instance, did you ever think a clear rock wall could exist? Can you even think of what a bubble climber could be? Technology in the playground realm has reached new heights, allowing children to have new experiences; and equipping landscape architects with even more design options.

The Clear Rock Wall is one of the best, most cutting edge features out there today.

The clear rock wall is from Xccent Play is the first of its kind. On the Xccent website, details of the equipment are as such: it is, “made of virtually indestructible extruded polycarbonate,” and includes 70 holds, “made of durable UV resistant polyurethane.” Images of the wall can also be found on the site. Obviously, the wall is built sturdy and secure, but it also has holds on both sides so that kids can climb facing each other—a truly unique experience. The wall is fresh, but what’s better is that it continues to offer the benefits of play.

Experiences such as this one on the Clear Rock Wall are unique and fun.

Another novel feature is the bubble climber, from Miracle. This colorful attraction has a form like no other. Instead of the traditional holds that kids use to climb on, it has bubbles cut out that offer the same activity but with a different twist. The aesthetic appeal is also increased with a more organic feel that stems from flowing curves. The looks are also improved with vivid colors like bright red and green. This contemporary playground update will turn any playground from bland to original and remarkable.

Its aesthetic, its functional, its cost-effective... its the bubble climbing wall.

These two innovative features take tradition, stick it in the oven, and turn up the heat a couple notches. When modern technology teams with original thinking, anything is possible—in the playground world, that means more fun.
